The E. coli outbreak in Europe has infected more than 1,500 people and killed 17 thus far. A Chinese genomics group has sequenced the genome of the infectious bug in only days using a new sequencing method called Ion Torrent. Find out how it works here.
Initial analysis of the Eurobug genome shows that it is likely a hybrid of two other dangerous bacteria who have swapped genes to create a new deadly strain. It also appears to contain several antibiotic resistance markers, making doctors’ jobs that much harder. Because being super-deadly wasn’t enough, right?
The source, although originally thought to be Spain, is still unknown.

That part about sequencing the entire genome in mere days is awesome. 0.0
